THE EVENT

POCOLA, OK (May 6th , 2017) – The third points race of the season at the legendary Tri-State Speedway was a remarkable difference in weather conditions at the famous high banks in Pocola, OK from what we’ve been  facing the last several weeks. With temps in the low 80’s, the track prep crew was able to perform a little magic in order to get the track into a raceable condition for the fans and drivers, despite the previous two weeks of rain.

The pre-race ceremonies of the invocation, along with a memorial reading honoring the late Danny Martinez, Jr., and the National Anthem, for the evening started at 8 PM. During the National Anthem, police vehicles from several local agencies and the track ambulance, along with drivers wishing to show their support and respect, made a few memorial laps, to a standing ovation, in honor of the fallen Fort Smith Police Department officer and fellow racer who was tragically killed in the line of duty, just over 10 years ago.

The race program started with heat races for all five classes. Heat race lineups for all classes, except the IMCA Modifieds, were determined by the driver’s draw at sign in. The IMCA Modifieds followed the published rules for that class. The classes, that drew for their starting heat position, advanced to their features via their finish in their heats. Plus, the last heat winner drew a number for the number of cars to invert for the A Feature.

At intermission at about 9:30 PM, everyone had a chance to grab themselves one of the new “Tommy burgers” and other hot food that Audrey and her crew had cooking on the grill and get some cool beverages into their system. Also, due to the trophy shop not making the correct number of trophies the last time we raced, the winners from those races that were on hand had their trophies presented to them.

TOP THREE

The first race on the track after intermission was the USRA B-Mods for their A Feature that saw Stephen Muilenburg (39 – Sparta, MO) break the winning streak for Hunter Byers (88B – Rogers, AR) who crossed the line in second ahead of Chad Summerford (03 - Centerton, AR) in third.

Next up was the Pure Stocks for their A Feature where Wesley Bourne (5 – Cameron, OK) took the win for his second of the year as Adam Gipson (20 – Lavaca, AR) who was nipping on his heels and Jacob Cox (99 - Pocola, OK) followed in second and third, respectively.

Next was the IMCA Modified A Feature where Kayden Menasco (49 – Muldrow, OK) captured the checkers for the first time this season over Jason Payton (6 – Greenwood, AR) as Stephen Muilenburg (39 – Sparta, MO) finished in third.

The next feature on the track was for the Super Stocks. Grant Davis (1 – Muldrow, OK) picked up the win over a strong Dylan Davlin (26H – Shady Point, OK). Brandon Henry (8H – Ozark, AR) finished in third place.

The USRA Modified A Feature was the last on the track next and saw Brandon Hunter (1/4 – Alma, AR) take home first place finish of the year over a charging Jeremy Vaughn (8 – Pocola, OK) and the previous week’s winner, Trevor Latham (27L – Rogers, AR).

All race results, including heats, are available on the website, as well as current track point standings.
