Byers, Bourne, Payton, Evans and Williams Win First Point Race of the Season

 THE EVENT

POCOLA, OK (April 15th, 2017) – The first points race of the 47th consecutive year of racing at the legendary Tri-State Speedway had 78 cars battling it out on the famous high banks for their head start towards the big prize at the end of the season. Even though we were a week behind thanks to Mother Nature, we should be caught up with our regular schedule at this point.

The pre-race ceremonies of the invocation and the National Anthem, for the evening started just before 8 PM, which is now the scheduled start time, due to Daylight Savings Time and the forthcoming summer heat

The race program started with heat races for all five classes on hand. With it being the first points race of the season, hose lineups were determined by a pill draw at the driver sign in window. Lineups for future point races throughout the remainder of the season will be determined by the driver’s point average, which is the number of points earned divided by the number of races they’ve competed in.

At intermission at about 9:30 PM, everyone had a chance to grab themselves one of the new Tommy burgers that Audrey and her crew had cooking on the grill and refresh their thirst with an ice-cold Coca-Cola product in the nice 20 oz. re-closeable bottles.

TOP THREE

The first race on the track after intermission was the USRA B-Mods for their A Feature that saw Hunter Byers (88B – Rogers, AR) rode his P1 starting spot to the win over Daniel Tarkington (2 – Checotah, OK) and Lonny Flanagan (7 – Rudy, AR).

Next up was the Pure Stocks for their 20 lap A Feature where Wesley Bourne (5 – Cameron, OK) took home the win as Andrew Bohanan (X – Stigler, OK) and Kegger winner, Rick Edgerton (27 – Fort Smith, AR), followed in second and third.

Next was the IMCA Modified A Feature where Jason Payton (6 – Greenwood, AR) out-dueled Kayden Menasco (49 – Muldrow, OK) for the win and early race leader, Chuck Bumgarner (55 – Muskogee, OK), finished in third.

The next feature on the track was for the Super Stocks. Third generation driver, Ty Evans (5E – Fort Smith, AR), survived several late-race challenges from H. Palmer (X15 – Roland, OK) for the win, as Jay Rierson (71 – Booneville, AR) drove his Ford-powered machine to a third-place finish.

The USRA Modified A Feature was the last on the track next and saw Brian Williams (26 – Fayetteville, AR) take his tenth place starting machine all the way to the front for the win over Kyle Ledford (75 – Greenwood, AR), who started sixth, and pole-sitter, Brent Holman (17 – Rogers, AR).
