THE EVENT
POCOLA, OK (May 13th, 2017) – The fourth points race of the season at the legendary Tri-State Speedway was met with perfect weather conditions courtesy of Mother Nature, along with 117 racers wanting to prove they’re the best. With temps in the mid-80’s and a slight southerly breeze, the track prep crew was able to get the track into a very raceable surface. Even though there was, once again some late week rain, the racing surface produced three-wide action all night, including some four and five-wide late model action.
The pre-race ceremonies of the invocation and the National Anthem started at 8:05 PM, just a few minutes past our scheduled start of 8 PM, which is the scheduled start time until further notice.
The race program started with heat races for all five classes, plus the Southern Outlaw Late Models. Heat race lineups for all classes, except the IMCA Modifieds, were determined by the driver’s draw at sign in. The IMCA Modifieds followed the published rules for that class, which utilizes the driver’s point average for starting positions. The classes, that drew for their starting heat position, advanced to their features via their finish in their heats. Plus, the last heat winner drew a number for the number of cars to invert for the A Feature.
At intermission, about 9:45 PM, everyone had a chance to grab themselves one of the new “Tommy burgers”, fried bologna, fresh smoked BBQ sandwiches and other hot food that Audrey and her crew had cooking on the grill. Also, the winners from those races that were on hand had their trophies presented to them.
TOP THREE
The first race on the track after intermission was the USRA B-Mods for their A Feature Hunter Byers (88B – Rogers, AR) return to Victory Lane for his third win of the season as Daniel Tarkington (2- Checotah, OK) finished in second ahead of DustinsDream.net driver, Dean Green (28 – Siloam Springs,AR) in third.
Next up was the Pure Stocks for their A Feature. Adam Gipson (20 – Lavaca, AR) was able to “flip the script” from last week and take home his first win of the season as last week’s winner, Wesley Bourne (5 – Cameron, OK), finished in second ahead of Marshall Penson (1P – Van Buren, AR).
Next was the IMCA Modified A Feature where the roles were reversed from last week as Jason Payton (6 – Greenwood, AR) took the checkers for the second time this season. Last week’s winner, Kayden Menasco (49 – Muldrow, OK) finished in second over new-comer Bryce Clark (K1 – Conway, AR) in third.
The next feature on the track was for the Super Stocks. Kyle Davis (19S – Muskogee, OK) picked up his second season win over a Brandon Henry (8H – Ozark, AR), who finished third last week. Third place went to Gean Davlin (26 – Shady Point, OK). Normally, we only post the top three here, but it was notable that Dylan Davlin (Gean’s son) finished close behind his dad in fourth.
The USRA Modified A Feature was up next and saw Lonnie Robins (33 – Alma, AR) take home his first first place finish of the year over a fast Brian Williams (26 – Fayetteville, AR) and Myles Newman, III (III - Alma, AR).
The last feature race of the night went to the Southern Outlaw Late Model Series and saw Rick Hearnsberger (XXX – Arkadelphia, AR) turn in a dominating performance. Clay Julian (00 – Alma, AR) finished in second ahead of Hank Long (52 – Stilwell, OK).
The last event of the night was the $1,500 to win, 100 lap Enduro which saw 31 drivers start the vent from a standing start on the front straight. From the start, a car stalled on the outside entrance into Turn 1 and became on obstacle for all of the other 30 cars to avoid for 100 laps. At the end, Kyle Slader (44 – Muskogee, OK) picked up his second win of the night over Jesse Brooks (43 – Batesville, AR) and Jay Rierson (6 – Booneville, AR).
